Fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity
Mary Wells
My Story
I have been connected with Habitat for Humanity for over 20 years.
I first got involved when I taught in Assumption Grammar School Ballynahinch. My colleague Monica Lewis and myself could see the value of taking part in a Habitat project with our sixth form students. We were inspired by Habitats vision of "a world where everyone has a decent place to live".
We were very much attracted to the idea of working alongside families in need of housing and to help our students reach out to those less fortunate and to become advocates for change.
With this in mind we travelled with groups of students to Mexico and Malawi between 2006 -2014 to work alongside families building new homes. These were amazing and enriching experiences for us all.
I retired from school in 2015 but I was reluctant to cut off my ties with Habitat for Humanity so I have volunteered with Habitats education programmes at Primary school and Secondsry school level. This has been a very rewarding period as the programmes emphasise the active role that young people can play in changing things in society for the better. In addition, the programmes motivate young people to think how they can contribute to the local community as well as beyond Northern Ireland.
I have now reached a significant birthday and rather than presents this year I would like to use the opportunity to do some fundraising for this charity which is very close to my heart. I want to support the great work that Habitat for Humanity does locally as well as in war torn and disaster areas of the world.
I am so grateful for any support you can give me so that Habitat for Humanity can continue do such vital work in helping even more people in need of a decent home.
